Texas motorcycling couple killed in Rapides Parish crash

Many Louisianans know that motor vehicle accidents can be devastating to motorists no matter what types of vehicles are involved. People can be injured, sometimes leaving them permanently disabled, or even killed.

Motor vehicle accidents and their causes are continuously being studied by federal, state and local government agencies and law enforcement officials to find ways to minimize the chances of accidents and the level of destruction. Several findings suggest that motorcycle accidents are significantly worse on victims and their families because of the increased likelihood of serious injury and death.

One unfortunate Texas family is undoubtedly dealing with the emotional devastation of losing two family members in a motorcycle accident in Rapides Parish. According to the Louisiana State Police, the married couple was traveling on their motorcycle on Highway 121 in Hineston, some 70 miles northeast of Lake Charles, when a car tried to make a left turn in front of them. The motorcycle’s driver tried to brake to avoid a collision with the car but was unsuccessful. The victims, who were both wearing helmets, were ejected from their bike. They were taken to a local hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, a 62-year-old Calcasieu man, was not hurt. It is not known if the driver will be cited for his part in the accident.

Most accidents are preventable, and the majority of those are caused by negligence on the part of one or more motorists. Being alert while driving and aware of others on the road is the best way to prevent the loss of life. In this case, surviving family members will probably follow the accident investigation closely before deciding whether they can pursue a wrongful death suit against the driver.
