Can you get your job back after a work-related injury?

On Behalf of | Dec 7, 2020 | Workers' Compensation

Sustaining a work-related injury may leave you feeling defeated. Unsure of what your future looks like, your motivation to return to work may take a backseat to a lot of bigger concerns.

Working with your doctor to identify the likelihood of making a full recovery can help you to realistically assess your future. Regaining the desire to go back to work will play a central role in your ability to confidently market your skills and reenter the workforce after an injury.

Never say never

While it may seem easier to completely dismiss any thought of returning to your previous responsibilities with your current circumstances, refrain from making a judgement just yet. According to Chron, maintain constant communication with your employer and express your desire to get back to work as quickly as possible.

If your doctor identifies specific expectations for you to reach in order to receive clearance to return to work, share these goals with your employer. Your effort to communicate and stay involved may improve the possibility of getting your job back once you fully recover.

Finding alternatives

Depending on your line of work and who you work for, you may have alternative options to begin working again despite your injury. For example, you could ask your employer about the possibility of telecommuting. You could suggest modifications to your current responsibilities to make them doable with an injury.

If it is obvious that your employer cannot promise you a job after you recover, ask for their recommendations for employment elsewhere. Through their network and connections, they may successfully point you in the direction of another, promising job opportunity.
