Which Louisiana jobs are the most dangerous?

As in most states, the job market in Louisiana fluctuates. Perhaps, you're among the rare group of workers who have been with the same company for 20 years or more. More than likely, however, you might be part of the majority, which includes people who have worked two, three or more jobs in the past 10 years or so. Some jobs are obviously more dangerous than others are.

There is, of course, a certain amount of personal injury risk every time you report to work. However, if you happen to work in an industry that typically ranks on lists regarding most dangerous jobs in the state, you might be a bit more concerned about safety than those who work in less dangerous fields. No matter where you work, if you're in an on-the-job accident that results in injury, it's imperative that you understand how to navigate the workers' compensation claims process.

Main industries in Louisiana are highly dangerous

The following list includes several main industries in Louisiana, all of which are among the jobs typically considered among the most dangerous lines of work in the United States:

  • Commercial fishing is a prime industry in Louisiana. It also happens to be a high-risk job when it comes to personal injury risk to workers. Approximately 86 out of every 100,000 commercial fishing workers lose their lives in on-the-job accidents every year.
  • Another main industry in this state is agriculture. It, too, is among the most dangerous jobs in America, partially due to mishaps with the heavy machinery and power tools that farmers use in their work.
  • If you work in the oil or natural gas industries, you're also at great risk for injuries while at work.
  • Airline pilots, fire fighters and other public servants are often involved in on-the-job accidents that result in injury, as well.

If you or one of your family members work in the logging industry, you may already be aware that this is often considered the most dangerous job there is. Perhaps, you work in an office. That doesn't mean you are guaranteed to avoid injuries at work. In fact, such workplaces can be quite hazardous, especially if an employer fails in his or her obligation to provide proper training and safety equipment or to comply with safety regulations.

Where to seek support if an injury occurs

The highest priority if an on-the-job accident occurs is always to obtain medical attention. Even if you don't think you have suffered a serious injury, it's always best to seek medical attention. For one reason, not all injuries are immediately apparent. It also helps start a paper trail of documentation, which can come in handy if an insurance agent denies your claim or some other legal obstacle arises.
