Construction workers suffer workplace injuries in home collapse

On Behalf of | Oct 25, 2018 | Workers' Compensation

Workplace injuries can happen at any job in Louisiana, but it is undeniable that some jobs are riskier than others. One job that is dangerous due to its sheer nature is construction work. Whether it is a large commercial building, maintenance or a private reconstruction of a property, accidents are bound to happen. Since there are so many hazards on a construction project, it is important for those who are doing these jobs to take caution. When an accident does happen, the workers could be confronted with massive medical expenses, lost time on the job and even long-term damage and death. Having legal assistance is crucial to ensure they get the workers’ compensation benefits they are entitled.

A construction project on a one-story property led to 11 workers being hurt when it collapsed. The incident happened in the mid-morning at around 10:40 a.m. All the workers on the project were said to have suffered injuries. One was buried by debris at the rear of the house and could not move. He was conscious and taken to a hospital.

Three of the workers were on the ground when emergency personnel arrived. They were treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital. Seven workers had cuts and scrapes were taken to the hospital. It is not known why the structure collapsed and the investigation is ongoing.

After a work accident, those who were injured will naturally expect workers’ compensation to cover for their medical costs, wage loss and other expenses. However, that is not always the case. Some employers might assert that they are not responsible for the accident and try to avoid paying.

Others might imply that the workers will lose their jobs for trying to get the workers’ compensation benefits they are entitled to. When being examined by a medical professional for the insurer, there could be a disagreement as to the seriousness of the injuries.

With construction work and the heavy equipment, working at great heights and the need to trust other workers to maintain safety practices, it is not unusual for there to be accidents. As the injured workers are treated and the accident is investigated, it is wise for them to speak to a law firm experienced in helping clients with their workers’ compensation claims.
