A seemingly endless number of companies are working in or around Louisiana on oil rigs. This creates a significant number of jobs, but also heightens the risk that there will be accidents. With the drilling, maintaining equipment and doing other tasks that are necessary for a rig operating smoothly, people need to be vigilant. Unfortunately, some of these incidents result in injuries or a wrongful death. If a family that has suffered the loss of a loved one in a fatal accident at work they may want to speak to an attorney about whether or not to pursue a legal filing.

A drillship near Louisiana had an accident which led to a worker’s death. The incident occurred on a drillship when the worker, a floor hand, was working on pipe-handling operations. According to the report, he was between a support barrier — a stanchion — on the rig floor. He had his back to what is known as the retracting skate. It shifted and its loading platform pinned him to the stanchion. His injuries resulted in his death.

When a person goes to work, the last thing his or her family is expecting is that it will be the last time they see each other. However, work accidents can happen no matter what kind of work a person does. When they are operating heavy equipment, a simple mistake can cause the worst to happen. Families who have lost a loved one on the job will need to be aware of how the loss will affect their lives. There will be the inevitable emotional issues. Then there will be the financial and personal issues that arise soon after. The person who died was likely a major contributor to the family’s finances. Although insurance might cover some of what was lost, that is rarely sufficient to help for the long-term. This is when a legal professional can assist with a full investigation to determine what happened and to prepare for litigation if it is necessary.

A worker on an oil rig was killed when a piece of equipment pinned him. The investigation into the case is continuing, and a safety alert has been issued. In accidents such as this, the family of the deceased must protect themselves and have an advocate who is looking out for their best interests.
