When a person gets behind the wheel of a car, they have a responsibility to other motorists to exercise caution and care while driving. If a driver behaves negligently or drives drunk and causes a car accident, he could be liable for damages. Victims may receive compensation for medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages and much more. If a family loses a loved one in an accident, they may be able to file a wrongful death suit against those responsible for the death of their family member. This will allow them to recover funeral costs, medical expenses, and loss of income.
A recent tragedy on the road has left one man dead and another facing DWI charges. The accident occurred when a 63-year-old Lake Charles man was traveling south in his pick-up truck and another vehicle rear-ended him. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. A passenger in the man’s truck was airlifted to the hospital and is reportedly stable.
The driver of the other vehicle showed obvious signs of intoxication and was taken to the hospital for toxicology testing. Results are still pending. Both he and his passenger refused medical treatment. He was later booked on one count of first-offense DWI and is now in the Calcasieu Correctional Center. Bond is pending at this time. He also had an outstanding warrant for contempt of court.
Accidents like this are tragic, but it can be comforting for victims and their families to know that those responsible can be held liable for damages. While nothing can erase their pain and suffering, it can make things a little bit easier moving forward.
