David Hanchey was born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana. His father, Carl, was a lawyer, and his mother, Sharon, was an English and French teacher. David’s parents had high standards for him and his sister and instilled a hard work ethic and integrity throughout their lives. David took the skills his parents taught him to excel as a lawyer.
After graduating from Barbe High School, David went to Louisiana State University and obtained a degree in finance. David then attended law school at LSU Law and graduated in 1989.
During law school, David clerked for large defense firms in the summer, which helped him pay for school. After graduating, he did a year-long clerkship for United States District Judge Donald Walter before being hired at a large firm in Baton Rouge.
He stayed in Baton Rouge for nine years, doing legal work for Fortune 500 companies, national insurance companies, higher educational institutions, and many other types of businesses and entities.
In 1999, David moved back to Lake Charles to fulfill his desire to work representing people rather than insurance companies and large corporations. In 2006, he wanted to start his own practice with his father. They worked together for six years until his father passed away.
Shortly after, David moved to New Orleans to help start a new office for a large law firm representing injured people. Then, in 2019 he was asked to join The Townsley Law Firm. At TLF, and because of his prior trial experience, David started trying cases right away. He has since helped train younger lawyers in the firm.
David is currently the Insurance Section Chair for the Louisiana Association for Justice. He was a past president and board member of the Southwest Louisiana Bar Association. He also was a previous board member for his kids’ school and his church. He still occasionally speaks at continuing legal education courses and continues to support various legal organizations in any way he can.
Outside of work, David loves the outdoors. He goes running several times a week, he plays tennis with his wife, goes fishing, and walks his dog regularly. David also likes hanging out with his kids and grandkids. These things allow David to clear his mind.
David has three children, Brian, Scott, and Kristen. David also has three grandchildren, Peyton, Nora, and Lola. His family supports him and inspires him to work hard helping the injured and their families.
TLF has provided David with a tight-knit community, and he appreciates the freedom he has to exercise his unique skills. David gets satisfaction from representing people and helping them put their lives back together.
