How do you feel about sharing the road with automated vehicles?

On Behalf of | Apr 4, 2019 | Car Accidents

You have probably heard about the self-driving vehicles that many automakers are rushing to develop. Some of the most popular manufacturers in the United States and beyond are all striving to be the first company to successfully develop, market and release a fully automated vehicle for public use. Like many others, you may have deep concerns about these vehicles and how safe they truly are.

Many consumers have serious doubts about how these vehicles work. There are some industry experts who believe that it will take a lot for automakers to overcome these concerns, and as a result, automated vehicles may not be the smashing success some expect them to be. Polls indicate that most consumers are not excited about sharing the road with these vehicles and not really interested in owning one or riding in one.

Serious reservations about safety

You may not like it, but it is inevitable that you will likely share a Louisiana road with a driverless vehicle at some point in the near future. You are not alone in your hesitation — a recent poll indicated that as many as 72 percent of people are not comfortable with the concept of self-driving vehicles. Most consumers want to have control over the operation of their vehicle and where they are going.

One reason for the significant reservations that many consumers have about automated cars is that they get most of their information about these vehicles from mainstream news sources. With the development of any technology, people tend to focus on negative incidents, even though automakers are designing automated systems to operate at a higher standard of safety than seen in most human drivers. Many headlines about automated technology come from incidents in which human error played a role in what happened.

Your safety, your rights

This technology is still in the development stage, but many companies are entering the road-testing phase of their automated cars. When testing a self-driving system, it is the responsibility of the automaker to ensure the public is not needlessly and recklessly endangered.

No matter how you feel about cars with no drivers, you probably know that most accidents take place because of some form of human error. If you suffered injuries in an accident that was not your fault, you do not have to suffer in silence, but you have the right to seek compensation for your pain and suffering and hold liable parties accountable.
