Motherhood, burnout and medical malpractice might be linked

When Louisianans think about medical errors and what caused them, they will inevitably consider simple carelessness, a lack of experience, miscommunication between medical professionals and other common reasons why these dangerous incidents occur. A careless surgeon, a general practitioner who made the wrong diagnosis, wrong-site surgery and medication mistakes can happen for a variety of reasons.

For those who believe their loved one was injured or died because of a medical mistake, it is critical to know the cause. Researchers also seek reasons as to why they happened so steps can be taken to prevent them.

As one study shows, sometimes the potential causes of these errors can be surprising. For instance, burnout happens with medical professionals quite frequently, but women who have children are likely to have a link between the two factors after an adverse incident or a medical error.

The study, focused in part on with female physicians and paid specific attention to those with children. The study examined the emotional impact from having a role in a medical error. In the study, there were 5,700 participants. They ranged in specialties and where they practiced. The survey was online and anonymous. Nearly half stated they had been involved in a medical mistake. Being involved was found to be connected to more reports of burnout.

More than 8 out of 10 stated they felt guilty after making a medical error. Slightly more than 2 percent said they were forced to reduce their workload and take time off from working in healthcare. The researchers stated that female physicians with children had a greater risk for experiencing burnout. To avoid this burnout, the authors of the study advised more research into the issue.

People who have been injured or suffered a worsened condition because of a medical error should consider all the possibilities as to why it occurred. An understated cause might be a female physician who is a mother and is burned out. Given the litany of problems that can occur after a medical mistake, costly treatment, lost wages, lifetime damage and even death, it is imperative to have legal advice on how to move forward with a medical malpractice lawsuit. Contacting a law firm that has experience investigating medical mistakes and their cause is key to getting compensation in a lawsuit.
