Increased road safety is important to Louisianans and people across the nation. To determine how to achieve this, research is critical. While technology is improving and law enforcement and legislators have more information at their disposal to determine strategies to improve safety, there are still a significant number of auto accidents resulting in personal injury and death. Research from the National Safety Council (NSC) showed just how common fatal auto accidents have been and continue to be.

The NSC says that road fatalities in the U.S. surpassed 40,000 for the third consecutive year. In addition to these fatalities, there were about 4.5 million serious injuries in auto crashes in 2018. Although, technically, there was a decline in the number of deaths, the sheer total is concerning to researchers, lawmakers, and law enforcement. In 2018, the number of fatalities reduced by about one percent from the previous two years. Even with that, the NSC president and chief executive officer says that the number of fatalities is unacceptable and must be reduced. He says that solutions are necessary to make people safer and lower the number of fatalities.

For 2018, there was a 14 percent increase in road fatalities from 2014. Driver activity is considered a substantial contributor to the number of fatalities stagnating at more than 40,000. Drivers are advised to drive defensively, wear their seatbelts, not drive under the influence, be rested to prevent drowsy driving, and avoiding distracted driving behaviors. Other ways to be safer include keeping a close watch on other drivers who might be under the influence and to use all safety features available in the vehicle. Of course, even those who drive the most defensively are at risk of being injured or killed in a wreck caused by a negligent drivers.

A car accident victim can be confronted with medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages when they are injured. With fatalities, the family left behind will have to find a way to deal with funeral costs, lost wages, and the emotional impact from their unexpected loss.. For these reasons, those who have been impacted by a wreck must consider filing a legal claim with assistance from a law firm that understands the details of seeking compensation after car accidents.
