Alleged hit-and-run drunk driver crashes into and kills bicyclist

On Behalf of | Dec 28, 2018 | Car Accidents

When Louisianans head out on the road after drinking, they are putting themselves and others in danger of suffering catastrophic injuries and death in an auto accident. While this is known and law enforcement is out in force trying to stop these drivers before anyone gets hurt, it still happens with an alarming frequency.

Holiday time exacerbates the problem as many will be out with family and friends and decide to have a few alcoholic drinks, then get behind the wheel. After such a crash has occurred, the injured person and, if there is a fatality, the family left behind should know how to pursue compensation in a legal filing.

A 61-year-old bicyclist was riding north when he was hit by a car. The driver, 48, then fled the scene. Once he was caught, law enforcement tested him to see if he was under the influence and found that his blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit in the state. The rider died. The driver was arrested. Law enforcement stated that this is a common occurrence during the holidays. The driver is facing hit-and-run, vehicular homicide, DUI and other charges.

When there is a car crash, there is a chance that people will suffer serious injuries, be confronted with massive medical costs, lose time on the job and more. In an accident between vehicles, at least the victims are somewhat protected. When it is an accident with a bicyclist, that is not the case. The rider is at the mercy of a vehicle and the results are often the worst-case scenario with a fatality.

To make matters worse, drivers are often under the influence when they hit a rider and then compound the accident by fleeing the scene. The family of a person who was killed in such an incident must know they will face personal and financial turmoil. While a lawsuit will not bring their loved one back, it can help them to move forward.

An apparent drunk driver hit a bicyclist, killing him. The driver then tried to flee. He was caught and placed under arrest. As the investigation continues, the family of the man who died must consider the future and contact a law firm that has experience with fatal bicycle-car accidents to take the necessary steps to file a lawsuit.
