Being a distracted driver crosses generational lines

To drive safely, responsible Louisianans will understand that they need to focus on the road and not allow themselves to become a distracted driver. However, it is a fact that people are growing more and more reckless on the road because of the accessibility technology accords them -- namely, smartphones and other devices. Studies show different statistics when assessing who is most at risk for distracted driving. One takes the blame away from Millennials for the rise in distracted driving and indicates that older drivers are taking part in the activity on a regular basis.

The study from a Harris poll conducted for Volvo indicates that younger people are not the only ones who are driving while distracted. It crosses age groups and is a problem across the spectrum. So-called "Generation Xers" are found to take part in distracting activities more often than Millennials and members of Generation Z. Seventy-three percent of parents stated that they were guilty of using their smartphones when behind the wheel. Overall, that number was 66 percent. One out of three parents admitted to using their phones when their children were riding with them.

The group that was found to have the highest rate of behaving responsibly was Generation Z. They used their devices behind the wheel far less than their Generation X and Millennial counterparts. Eighty-nine percent of Generation Z said they wanted to reduce their use of smartphones even more. Sixty-four percent overall said the same. Exactly one-third said they drove in silence to keep their distraction at a minimum. Thirty-two percent placed their phone in "do not disturb" mode.

Fifty-five percent stated they believed distracted drivers are the biggest danger on the road. Fifty-one percent stated the greatest danger was drivers who were under the influence. Eighty-nine percent said an increase in education as to how dangerous it is to be a distracted driver is imperative.

No matter which study is examined and cited, it is indisputable that distracted driving is one of the most common causes of accidents today. Those who have been in a car accident with a distracted driver can lose time at work, have major medical expenses and face lifelong issues. It can easily cause death. Having legal help can be crucial to file a lawsuit and be compensated after car accidents, especially distracted driving car accidents.
