Claiming damages after a car accident

The injuries and damages you suffer in a car accident can turn your life upside down. With the bills piling up, you may need financial support as you recover. If your car accident was caused by a negligent driver, Louisiana law allows you to recover compensation to cover these bills by filing a personal injury suit.

The compensation you receive may cover various expenses and damages, both economic and non-economic. First, the jury may award you damages for your medical bills. These bills can cover hospital stays, rehabilitation, treatments, surgeries, physical therapy, and other expenses. You may also be awarded damages for medical treatments that you may need in the future.

If you have suffered serious injuries in a Louisiana accident, you may be unable to work in the weeks and months after the incident. Damages for lost wages cover the money you would have earned, up to the time of trial, had you been able to go to work. If your injuries prevent you from earning wages in the future, you may recover damages for the loss of future earning capacity and permanent disability. The jury will look at your age, experience, past job earnings and other factors to determine how much you should recover.

Not all recoverable damages are economic. You can also recover damages for pain and suffering, including the emotional trauma that occurred as a result of your accident. Your uninjured spouse may also be able to recover damages for a loss of affection or companionship caused by your injuries.

Both economic and non-economic damages can provide the financial support you and your family need after an accident on the road. Discussing your case with a qualified attorney can help you recover the damages you are entitled to.
