New technology aims to avoid car accidents through cell phones

Honda unveiled new technology this week, that could help prevent pedestrian, motorcycle and car accidents. The technology is meant to detect pedestrians ahead of cars, using technology to pick up signals from a pedestrian's cell phone. The car would then be able to communicate with the device and determine if the person was distracted by music or a phone conversation, and help the car make a decision.

The car would then notify the driver of the impending danger allowing the driver to brake, or it could brake autonomously if the driver can't react in time. With over 32,000 traffic fatalities in 2011, this technology could hopefully have a dramatic impact on preventing accidents and deaths.

According to a report on the new technology, which is in prototype phase, it can also be used to detect motorcyclists and apply a hard brake if needed to stop the vehicle and avoid a collision.

While technology is making vehicles much safer, drivers should never rely on these advances or decide not to pay attention because they know their car will stop them in an emergency. Drivers still have the responsibility to avoid accidents and pay attention on the road.

When someone is injured because of a car accident, they might be wise to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney. They can help a person understand their rights and work with them to seek compensation. Although this compensation can't undo an accident, it might be able to help a person pay for medical expenses.
