Many lists are published yearly about the most hazardous workplaces and common issues that cause workplace accidents, such as improper communication or machine guarding. But, there are more basic risks that can cause workplace in any sector.

As summer approaches, Louisiana residents working hard on the job may forget to keep themselves hydrated, which is a common cause of accidents. Dehydration can lead to serious health issues and employers can easily remedy this act by not only providing adequate drinking water, but also reminding them to quench their thirst.

An act as easy as lifting an object can be hazardous if not performed properly or if the object is too heavy. It can lead to a sprained muscle, or even worse a tear or strain. Employees should be encouraged to communicate with one another if an object is heavy and ask for assistance.

Poor lighting can lead to slip and fall accidents. It is one of the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that all workplaces be adequately lighted and violating this can lead to serious workplace injuries. Similarly, OSHA requires hazard communication and failure of this is one of the common reasons accidents take place — proper handling of toxic material can decrease the likelihood of workplace illnesses.

There are a number of reasons an employee can become injured in the workplace and many of them stem from an employer neglecting his or her duty to provide a safe working environment. When this happens and injuries or illnesses result, it might be possible to get compensated through a workers’ compensation claim.
