Disturbing statistics about distracted driving and car accidents

By now most people in Louisiana know that it isn't a good idea to use a cellphone while driving. Unfortunately, there are millions of people throughout the country who engage in this type of risky behavior every day. How risky is distracted driving? Statistics are starting to show that it is just about as risky as drunk driving. And the results can be the same: devastatingly injurious and fatal car accidents.

The federal government keeps track of statistics concerning distracted drivers and the accidents, injuries and deaths they cause. For instance, in 2014 alone there were over 3,000 people killed in auto accidents involving distracted drivers. That same year another 431,000 more people were injured in these wrecks.

Why is distracted driving becoming such a problem on the roadways and highways of America? Well, the primary culprit might be cellphones, although other distractions are obviously part of the problem as well. Statistics show that in 2011 an estimated 52 percent of drivers on the roads of our country owned so-called "smartphones." By 2014 - just a three-year span of time - that number had jumped all the way to 80 percent.

Louisiana residents who are injured in a car accident caused by a distracted driver may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit to pursue financial compensation. These victims oftentimes face severe injuries that require extensive medical care and even hospitalization - and with that comes mounting medical expenses. Others will be unable to return to work as a result of their injuries, leaving the problem of lost wages. When a car accident is caused by a distracted driver, Louisiana residents may have legal options, though, so they may want to consider them carefully.
